Enquadramento

The Christmas holiday is intensely lived by the vast majority of the inhabitants of the island of Madeira, through continuous characteristic celebrations of their own. Through time, the Christmas tree or “pinheirinho da Festa”, took a very specific outline. The creative use and combination of the few resources available of other times, allowed for more alternative and quite ingenious versions of Christmas trees to emerge; exclusive in the way of experiencing and living Christmas in the Island of Madeira.

From a botanical and cultural point of view, a madeiran Christmas tree (“pinheirinho da Festa”), could be many things: a pine tree (Pinus pinaster), small or medium-sized, decorated with lights and balloons; a branch of loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) with flowers of intense fragrances, and leaves that are covered with fine glitter; a tree branch or juvenile Madeiran holly (Ilex perado), dried branches of other trees covered with lichens.

Many other plants abundant on the island this time of year and in pots and gardens of some homes, are used in decorations, such as: a madeiran fern (Davalia canariensis), the climbing butcher’s broom (Semele androgyna), the feast orchid (Cymbidium Tracyanum); the Lady Slippers (Paphiopedilium Insigne) and branches of “Ensaião” (Aeonium arboreum), all capable of causing synesthesia, making Christmas a recollection of fragrances that emanate from these bits of December’s fresh nature.

Yet another possible version of the Madeiran Christmas tree is a hybrid between a tree and the crib: at the foot there’s the perfect miniature rugged terrain of the island and a cave that holds the scene of the birth of Jesus, surrounded by a plethora of objects and many fruits that shrivel and rot because after it’s made, adults warn the children: just to look!

Pinheiro d’Olhar 2011 it’s an art exhibition that gathers a combination of twelve creative pieces that interpret a different concept of the Christmas tree. This project was developed by twelve regional artists, from a singular modular structure made of metal and coated with canvas; it has two previous editions that were exhibited at “Espaço Infoarte” in the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture. The first, occurred in Christmas 2009, showing the art work of the following artists: Dina Pimenta, João Egídio, João Pestana, Lilia Pimenta, Martinho Mendes and Sílvio Cró. The second exhibition, in 2010, displayed the art work of six other artists: Gonçalo Martins, Guareta Coromoto, Hélder Folgado, Isabel Natal, Roberto Correia and Teresa Gonçalves Lobo.

This showing with an open circuit, allows us all kinds of interpretations with different meanings, existing in this combination of works an implied reference to the twelve months of the year.

Dina Pimenta (in the first version) subverts the orientation of the conic structure of the base, giving us a different perspective, through a little child’s eyes, where the trunk is the most noticeable part of Christmas tree, instead of the top that pulls away in invisibility due to its height.

Gonçalo Martins follows his personal interrogations, taking on a provoking and irreverent approach, by evoking religion and questioning its role nowadays.

Guareta Coromoto displays a tree of great gestural and pictorial expressiveness, which explores the relation between the organization and the chaos that results of the preparations for this festive holiday.

Hélder Folgado discusses the relation of conflict between the natural and the artificial, a noticeably environmentalist reflection.

Isabel Natal created her tree from memories and personal fables of her childhood, around the experience of Christmas. The shoe and its laces give rise to a hybrid between painting and sculpture.

João Egídio covers the structure of the base with shoes that he gathered from his friends and acquaintances, an approach that brings us to the tradition of the shoe (similar to Christmas stocking) as placement for the gifts.

João Pestana used photography as a metaphor of a woman-tree, where her crossed arms repeated on the pyramidal structure’s face, suggest branches of a tree filled with sensuality.

Lilia Pimenta recreates the envelopes from other times, in a clear allusion to the letters and postcards sent to friends and distant relatives. As information and element representing the presence of those who were absent, these cards and letters were hung on Christmas trees or placed in their proximity.

Martinho Mendes appeals to ecological thinking and protection of the environment, through a metaphorical piece that represents the submersion of a planet as a consequence of the climate change.

Roberto Correia displays the grotesque of the traditional killing of the pig.

Silvio Cró explores the concept of light showing us a disquieting “gambiarra” (Christmas lighting), able to establish connections to different areas and current issues that deserve all of our attention.

Teresa Gonçalves Lobo recreates the inside of the structure, representing the tree as a living body, fed by vein netting that draws itself tridimensional in space.

Journey of Faith - In this work I follow my own storm of questions; I dive in introspection about this distinctive and unmistakable object of this season, that’s associated to the religious philosophy. In the actual reality, supermarkets and churches vie for customers; the difference is that one of them offers cheaper products, while the other promises to relieve suffering, offering salvation. I’m not the fruit of the devil for not knowing the truth about his existence; it might be reasonable for me to question about religion and its role nowadays. The Church has entered a theology of prosperity, allied to a heretic, decadent and theatrical trip.

Olhar no passado...
Pinheiros naturais, odores, seivas e seus habitantes. Cor, muita cor, formas diversas, bolas, fitas, gambiarras e muitas personagens...

Olhar no presente...

Look in the past...
Natural trees, fragrances, saps and its inhabitants. Color, lots of color, different shapes, ornaments, ribbons, Christmas lights and many characters… And in the end, a mantle of snow. A festive chaos. The gestures converge with every individual’s poetic values.

Look in the present...
Artificial trees, paper ornaments, cords and strings, all non detrimental materials to the active participation of the furry and feline beings... This authorial piece (pine tree with a metallic structure lined with canvas), has a gestural and figurative language, that falls upon a narrative about organizing the festive chaos round the Christmas tree. It’s a pictorial expressiveness embracing pure colors, textures and engraved designs, and might volumetrically represent the fussy, furry and feline beings that presently populate my Christmas tree.

Get in/Get out it’s an Installation that brings notice to a, sometimes conflicting, connection between the artificial – usually sustained by a distorted conception of evolution – and the natural, unrefined, and sometimes primitive. After giving it a lot of (noticeably environmental) thought, I present one of many contradictions, like consequences, reflecting about a particular situation, which can be related to issues of Global concern.

1. O meu pinheiro de olhar.
Lembro e relembro o meu (sapato) apertado, atado, amarrado, laçado. E o pinheiro perguntava: dás-me os teus laços? Sim…

1. My tree to look
I recall and well remember my tight, tied, laced shoe. It was huge, my shoe. I slept inside my shoe, holding on to boxes, dreams, my childhood. It had every color, my shoe: white, red, pink, yellow, green, blue… It always matched the bows that embellished my ponytails. I climbed trees, and from time to time, that wild pine tree, the big one that insisted on catching my eye (every day, it was like an eternal love). And I would come down from the pine tree, right down to the moist earth, irrigated by the first fall rain that prognosticates the winter. The pine tree asked: Can you give your bow ribbons? Yes… and I ran with my hair loose in the wind… I was the princess but I was alone, and then I realized “The crown that I was wearing was made of iron // so heavy, that all of me was bending“

2. This tree (of my own)to look
Here are (some possible) memories of my tree (to look). From yesterday, until now, the color (always) stays

“Sonny, come to the kitchen ‘cause it’s going to start screeching.”  This was the phrase that my grand aunt Ângela Andrade or aunt Ângela, told me many years ago. By Christmas time there’s the killing of the pig; in my family, it took place in aunt Ângela’s house. It was a big reunion of family members and acquaintances, motive for brothers, uncles, cousins and more cousins, from the youngest to the oldest, to spend time together, where there was a lot of talking but most of all, laughter. Having the theme of the killing of the pig in mind, it’s in homage, in a certain way, to those moments that, though it seems they’re a part of a distant past, they return to the present by the simple sound of a screech.
